PAFTE IV-B Officers and Directors 2012-2014 (no lists of officers submitted) Investiture for Practice Teachers and Field Study Students: A First in Laguna By Prof. Ronald Aquino Gonzales PAFTE IV-A Secretary, Dean of Education-City College of Calamba, Calamba City, Laguna It has been a pivotal concern of Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs), particularly of the deans of teacher education, to ensure that Practice Teachers and Field Study students are properly endorsed and deployed in the public schools where they can have the actual and practical teaching laboratory. Amalgamated with this concern is the assurance that the cooperating schools, through the Principal and the teachers, have the most understanding of the guidelines before the students’ stint and/or observation starts so that nothing can go wrong along the way. In practice, particularly in Calamba City, Laguna, the DepED issues indorsement to a TEI upon request for such. Then, a TEI proceeds directly to the cooperating school to endorse its students. As a result, problems and issues arise in the middle of the practice teaching and field study observation because no seminar or orientation for that matter is conducted. Based on comments and feedback from the cooperating teachers themselves, they are’nt properly oriented whenever they are assigned to accommodate and supervise a student teacher or field study observer. This prompted us to coordinate and partner with the Department of Education-Calamba City Division to come up with an Investiture for Practice Teachers and Field Study Observers in the city. The City College of Calamba (CCC) initiated and planned for the activity. After everything has been arranged and settled, the first ever Investiture for Practice Teachers and Field Study observers was realized on July 6, 2012 at the Lina Lajara Chipeco Auditorium in Calamba City. More than 600 teacher education students and faculty attended the activity. Likewise, the principals and cooperating teachers participated in the said event. Invited resource speakers were Dr. Milagros Lim-Borabo, PAFTE National Executive Secretary who talked about the the “Role of Practice Teaching and Field Study in Strengthening Pre-service education;” Dr. Myrna P. Pamplona, DepEd –Calamba City Division Superintendent who gave insights on the actual teaching experience and she also laid down the expectations of the DepEd from the TEIs and from the students as interns in the teaching profession; and Prof. Ronald A. Gonzales, PAFTE IV-A Secretary and Dean of Education of City College of Calamba who shared insights on teacher education practices, discussed the consolidated guidelines for Practice Teaching and Field Study Observation, and in turn, shared certain expectations from the cooperating teachers and principals. Several students and teachers from other TEIs also joined the activity. PAFTE Region IV-A Officers and Directors 2012-2014 Dr. Mercedes A. Macarandang Chair University of Batangas Dr. Joel D. The investiture, being the very first to have been realized in the city, earned positive feedback and commendation from the students and teachers. Dr. Borabo commended CCC for initiating this kind of activity and she commented that such was one of the best practices that other TEIs can possibly benchmark on. CCC was inspired about the turn out, hence it made a commitment to DepEd and to the students and teachers that the activity will be sponsored by the college every beginning of the academic year, before the students are immersed in the field. Aside from the investiture, CCC promotes to other TEIs its existing Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Education where in all the terms as regard the practice teaching and field study are stipulated. This MOA serves as a blanket of protection between and among the parties concerned. To sustain this activity and to promote solidarity and camaraderie among TEIs, not in only Calamba City, but also in the whole province of Laguna, CCC in cooperation with PAFTE IV-A plans to convene all the deans and educators in the province to establish its PAFTE provincial chapter. By so doing, all other sound activities for teacher education will be shared with and catered to all TEIs. This year, about 3,000 students and teachers attended the Quiz Bee and Seminar. Almost the same number of participants as last year got together for this very momentous event. The morning session was graced by Dr. Marilyn Balagtas of Philippine Normal University who served as the Guest Resource Speaker who shared a lot on Outcomes-Based Education (OBE). In the afternoon, students enjoyed the fun games and the contest on the most fun energizer which could be used by practice teachers in the field. The Quiz Bee was held right after the fun time. More than 44 colleges and universities participated in the quiz bee. A total of 54 TEIs were represented in the said affair. The De La Salle University- Dasmariñas, being the host of this year’s Seminar and Quiz Bee, took charge of the whole quiz bee activity. Espique “PAFTE at 40: Leading in the Formation of the Multiliterate Teacher Educator of the 21st Century” was the theme of the 40th National Convention of the Philippine Association for Teacher Education (PAFTE) held at Diamond Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, Manila on October 17-19, 2011. Filled with enthusiasm and cravings for innovations, a number of members from the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) attended the said activity. But, it was unfortunate that not all members were able to attend because of financial consideration which is beyond the control of the members. Despite these predicaments, the goals and objectives of the regional PAFTE to impart what has to be accomplished by the Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) in preparing pre-service teachers in their respective schools were not at all deterred. Adhering on collaboration and teamwork and underscoring the importance of the said activity, the officers led by Dr. Bernardita C. Ayunon, former chairman of PAFTE-CAR and the members who were able to attend were tasked to re-echo a topic in the national convention according to their expertise. Thus, the PAFTE-CAR Chapter sponsored a re-echo seminar on March 15-16, 2012 at the CTE Function Hall, Benguet State University, La Trinidad, Benguet which was attended by a significant number of TEI faculty members and pre-service teachers which made the endeavor successful. Study Tour, Membership. www.pafte.coolpage.biz Impressions on PAFTE Midyear Convention Visayas Cluster May 18-19, 2012 Theme: Revisiting the Teacher Education Curriculum in the Light of the K to 12 Curriculum Impressions: “If we’re so smart, why aren’t we rich?” (Quotation adopted from DC COMICS ANIMATION FORUM). The reason why personally I am for the implementation of the K to 12, is its going back to the basics of using the Mother Tongue as a medium of instruction in Grades 1 to 3. In terms of purpose, all plans, programs, and changes in the curriculum or the educational system as a whole are good. It’s how these are implemented that we often find ourselves in a dilemma. The implementation of the K to 12, whether ready or not, is probably met by some with enthusiasm and with resistance by quite a number because it surely rocks our comfort zone but delving deeper into its goals and objectives who would not be impressed by “ingon ana ba...spiral gud ba...” Nonetheless, we could not deny the fact that though the old system may no longer be our passport to the global arena, all of us here have benefited from it. We may not have undergone preschool, grade 7, and senior high but indeed we learned to speak English as early as grade 1 to 3 and even taught our pupils and students to speak the language in preschool that they’ll surely know that “the sun, the moon, and the stars are in the sky” and that even when asked of their names they’ll give the same answer “in the sky”. Indeed, nothing is permanent in this world but change and since we can’t afford to lag behind the rest of the world and it is our moral responsibility to prepare our students for life, “We must be proactive” and therefore take part in ensuring the success of the implementation of the K to 12 by qualifying ourselves to impart the needed knowledge and skills to our students, by updating our respective curricular programs in the tertiary level, and by upgrading our facilities and equipment to accommodate the senior high by 2016. “Ika nga”, “we cannot give what we do not have.” To end, we can never be resurrected unless we experience the passion on the cross. So dear comrades, let us each carry our cross and journey towards the glory of seeing and ensuring a better future for our children. MILAGROS AUREA A. SABIDALAS, EdD. I am also grateful to the Organizers and Working Committees for the PAFTE Mid-year Convention here in Mindanao, on May 4-5, 2012 and of course, Region XI as host Region. I always have high regard to PAFTE in its efforts to bring educators to the “shift away” orientation especially on major reforms, revised policies, innovative ways for teacher education, including licensure examinations, and continuing professional development. The focus of this Convention “Revisiting the Teacher Education Curriculum in the Light of the K to 12 Curriculum” is very relevant and timely. This is the reason we have a big crowd. CARAGA Region for one or Region XIII has great number of participants coming from SUC’s, private institutions offering Teacher Education, including Dep Ed Supervisors, Principals and Head Teachers who are actively pursuing Doctoral Studies. Thanks to Caraga Regional Chairman, Dr. Nemesio G. Loayon for the motivation. Listening to lectures on outcome based education, ensuring the content validity of LET, Research Findings in Current Teacher Education Curriculum and Teacher Education program and more importantly the K to 12 Curriculum standards and competencies are their supplications to Pre-service Education are indeed very rewarding. We are proud of all our lecturers! They are all highly professionals with wide exposures and orientations to current features of the global education agenda. MORE POWER!
